Thinking about a new film project?

If you have never been involved in film or video productions before it can seem somewhat more daunting than it actually is. Below are some things you might want to start thinking about for your next project. Feel free to contact us to discuss any of these topics.

The audience

Who is your film for? How much do they know about you? How motivated are they to find out about you or the message you want to communicate?

These are just some of the questions you can ask in defining your target audience. It is important to know from the very start as much about who will be watching the film as possible as this determines the content, style, tone and complexity of the film. For instance, will it be prospective clients or existing clients or even the families of clients? If it is an educational film, are they first year or introductory students or more advanced?

How the film will be used

Will your audience be watching this in a crowded and loud trade show, where hearing dialogue might be a problem? Will they be downloading the film via a website for viewing at home, in the office or at University? Will it be shown in a lecture theatre or seminar? Will they be on their own, with friends and family, or part of a larger audience?

The context in which a film is shown has a big impact on the type of content that should be in it, as well as the duration of the film. Often a film will be shown in a number of different environments, so again it is important to be clear about these as early as possible.

What you want the film to achieve

Like any form of communication, it is essential to be clear about both the message you want to convey from the film and how you want the audience to react to the film. What is the single most important concept or idea you wish to convey and what is needed to support this? Is this a Do you want to inform, inspire or entertain your audience?

Budgets, timelines and resources

Your budget for the film will have a big impact on the scope of what can be included in the film. So will the timeline. Will the people featuring in your film be available at the right time to meet deadlines? How many people need to approve the film and are they available? Even things such as location sourcing and booking need to be thought out in advance to ensure a smooth film production.

Our team has extensive experience in film production that we are happy to share with you, from initial briefing to final product, to help answer all the above questions.
